A stunning and engaging novel by a prominent African-American professor, Where I'm Bound is the first work of fiction solely focused on an African-American regiment to portray the Civil War in a manner befitting its grandeur and scope. Combining rousing adventure with masterful storytelling and important historical insight, Ballard allows readers to view the Civil War from the perspective of those African-American soldiers -- comprising ten percent of the Union forces -- who fought for their freedom.

It chronicles the Civil War adventures of black cavalry scout Joe Duckett as he and his hard-riding regiment roam the Mississippi Delta seeking to free slaves from the Confederates and keep vital waterways open for the Union. As the war winds down, Duckett sets out to return to the plantation he escaped from, unaware that his wife and baby daughter are making their own desperate bid for freedom.
